10 Hole Ocarina Range

Postby Nautilus on Thu Jul 02, 2009 5:13 pm

Hey,
I got a ten-hole ocarina and I've just got to ask, How many notes can I hit? I got a fingering chart that told me that I could play anywhere from A to G including sharps and flats, but it didn't tell me if I could play G flat or D flat. Could I get some help? I need either an updated fingering chart or some advice and/or techniques.

Can you post a picture of your ocarina? If you do I can probably make you a fingering chart! Also, do you know what key it is in?

Also, it's in the key of C.

What kind of songs do you think I can play? What are my limitations, do you think?

Thanks,

A standard 10 hole ocarina will p-play 18 notes (which includes the flats and sharps). If your oc is "standard," if the lowest note is C, then the top note should be F. From what I see in the picture, the finger holes appear to be the same size, which suggests to me that it isn't tuned well. The right hand "pinky" hole should be much smaller than either of the thumb holes, yet they appear to be nearly the same size.
Here is a link to a page with various fingering charts: link

With the finger holes sized as they are, you may have to partially cover and uncover some of the finger holes to play the scale accurately.
