buying my first ocarina.

Postby jab1235 on Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:21 am

well i saw a bunch of ocarina videos today and decided to buy one and try to learn it.
i don't want to spend to much because i don't know if i'll fully commit to it yet, but i still want it to sound good.
i want to get a pendant one because it seems like it is alot easier to learn.
im afraid to get an alto or tenner pendant because it seems like it will be to big.
i also have a sensitive ear and im afraid to get a saprano because i don't want to mess it up because they sound really loud on some of the higher notes.
does anyone have any sugjestions cause im totaly lost.

here are the ones im looking at:
http://www.focalink.com.tw/product_deta ... ductsid=36
http://www.focalink.com.tw/product_deta ... ductsid=39
http://www.focalink.com.tw/product_deta ... ductsid=96 - i don't evan know the size of this one.
http://www.stlocarina.com/j9.html - seems a bit big, but sounds good.
http://www.songbirdocarina.com/dev/swee ... egory_id=6 - sounds really high pitched.
http://www.songbirdocarina.com/dev/swee ... egory_id=6 - sounds good but again im afraid to ruin my ear.

oh by the way im sorry for my bad spelling if any of you noticed it.

I would really recommend a Songbird Alto!

It was my first ocarina, and I adore it!

It's not too big, and not too high! I personally think it's the best place to start!

thats what i want but then i heard it was an octer higher or lower then C, i forgot which.
is that going to be a problem?

i also like these:
http://www.stlocarina.com/j9.html it seems pretty big
http://www.focalink.com.tw/product_deta ... ductsid=32 in alto c (but theres no buying option)
http://www.focalink.com.tw/product_deta ... ductsid=96 this one looks kinda cool.

i still like the songbird one, and im not going to be playign to outher instraments or anything so i don't think the octive really matters.

I have heard that the first of those 3 ocarinas is very airy, but I have heard very good things about those Focalinks!

If you want to order in a certain color(or if there is no purchase link) I would recommend emailing Mr.Shih at Focalink! He is very kind, and can help you set up your order!

Also, if you order from Focalink, be sure to add a novelty pendant to your order! They are 4 hole soprano C ocarinas, so they will be an octave higher, and have the same fingerings, but you will only be able to play one octave :)

i've picked which i want. i really want the focalink but its 10-20 bucks for shipping.

i've picked this one:
http://www.songbirdocarina.com/dev/swee ... egory_id=6
songbirds seedpod in alto C, since it is a focalink, and its only $6 for shipping. i also like the sound.

Very good choice! Ordering from Songbird on your Focalink(s) will save you TONS of money on shipping!

Let me know what you think when you get it :D

Ok, so I'm replying to your PM here...

The fingering chart may be in Chinese so I recommend that you check out the resources for your style ocarina that Moonsyne has provided on TON! TON is active, OU is not!

This is moonsyne's page on English style ocarinas!
