Mountain Ocarinas players here?

Postby Panal on Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:14 am

Hello everybody. I recently got my very first ocarinas (two "Mountains", polycarbonate, both keys of G and C) and I started to share some thoughts about them in the "introduce yourself" section of the forum; but I find this is by far a better place to discuss of them. So I will start over here.

I'd love to get in touch with others Mountain's owners (and players!) to better understand stuff about the instruments, and to play about techniques and the like. I feel like "Mountains" are a minority here, so perhaps we should gather and discuss about them toeghether. If *there* are some other Mountain's players here, of course. :-D

Here's some issues I had in my first days of experimenting, I'd like to have your opinions. For now, a problem I found is about playing high pitches. First, ergonomically: keeping the ocarina steady with all the holes OPEN is pretty difficult to get used to.
Moreover, the higher is the note, the worse gets the tone. But still, I probabily have to find the right way to breath for every note. Opinions?

What worries me the most is about the plastic of the fipple of one of the two ocarinas (the G one). It looks defective, like if the melted plastic was cutted imprecisely when the piece was maked. I hope to gave the idea. I don't know if that's critical or not, the imperfection it's not SO BIG. But since that the mouthpiece is the most important part of any wind instrument I'm still unsure... Is it normal that I get a much cleaner sound on the C than on the G? Thoretically the G should be easier to play, but here is the opposite. Don't know if the problem is the fipple or whatever. Is it normal for you to get a cleaner sound on the C?

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experience.

Ciao!

Doesn't Mountain have a return policy? I would ask for a replacement for the defective looking one.

Hey you again, ciao :D :D :D

Well, first: I bought them from an ebay seller. So I should ask HIM before any others. Before bothering I just want to check if that's a problem or not. Shipment is a cost too, so I'd like to be 100% sure about this. As you can see, I'm not sure at all that it can be a problem. Perhaps yes. Perhaps no. Nobody else around uh?

:-)

thank you for replying by the way.

Hi, Mountain player here. :D

I've always found the G oc to have a clearer tone and be easier to play. If it looks defective, return it if you can. Next time buy straight from the company. Mountain has great customer service. Anyway, if your G's high notes sound weird at all--are you saying they do?--then that plastic you're talking about is a problem.

Yes, supporting the instrument with all holes open takes some getting used to. You're supposed to use your little finger/s for that.

How are you finding them otherwise? I've always enjoyed mine, and they're basically indistructible! Well, unless you melt them or something, I guess... :o

Thier website says

"..if one of your MOUNTAIN OCARINAS® is ever accidentally damaged to a point where you can no longer play it, simply return it to us. We will replace it free of charge with an ocarina of similar value. "

I think that would be worth shipping.

I contacted Mountain Ocarinas. I can't belive what happened.
Not only they will ship me a new ocarina for free, paying the postage costs, they doesn't even want the defective ocarina back!

I'm so impressed.
I've also ordered all their books and an "ivory" ocarina while I was there... I understood that I'm going to wear one all the time so why don't get one which also look good... I can avoid to hide it under the shirt all the time. :-)

Now, lets' go with the music!
