Hi, I'm punterschlagen.
I'm a music teacher in western Pennsylvania (I teach piano from home and advanced music theory at a local community music school). I have a BS in Music Education and play many (with varying degrees of skill), including piano, euphonium, trumpet, and hammered dulcimer. I have passing skill on flute and clarinet (enough to teach band with) but my favorite woodwind up to this point is the recorder. I own a bass, a tenor, two altos, innumerable sopranos, and a sopranino - I'm still looking for an affordable Garklein.
I became interested in ocarinas when I received my CD by Tania Opland and Mike Freeman, "Sunset's Gold," based on the poetry of Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels. Track 10, "Ghulees," features a duet between a harmony ocarina and a tenor recorder. I became very intrigued with the idea of the harmony ocarina and took to Google to begin my search for one. I took me a while to differentiate between "double" ocarinas and "harmony" ocarinas (as well as the labels of pendant/transverse/sweet potato/inline, etc.) and find what I wanted.
I narrowed my search to Charlie Hind, John Langley, and North Country Workshop. I decided to rule out Langley because I wanted two different keys to mess around with. I like the sound of the Hind ocarinas better than the North Country ones, and the price was right. I love the sound of Hind's harmony sweet potato, but the cost... just a bit beyond me. Plus, I think the inline fingering would be a good transition from recorder.
I'm anticipating the arrival of my "Double Ocarina in Walnut" from Charlie Hind (inline harmony tenor in F/C).
Double Ocarina in Walnut
Mostly I'm looking for good tunes to play on my new ocarina. Sheet music would be nice, but I can transcribe by ear, so I've written down "Jen's Song" from a video by Mr. Hind himself. I'm also working on "Ghulees" from the CD mentioned above, and arrangements of folksongs. And I don't even have the thing in my hands yet.
Thanks for reading.
