Ocarina Clay, and What Kind of Mold?

Postby jmocarina on Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:13 pm

Hey, I'm trying to figure out the best strategy on making molds for ocarinas, currently I'm using a Inner mold so I cover it with Clay, and don't need to hollow anything out. But what I find difficult is the fact I have to reconnect them, Which gets very Frustrating, Cause then it gets all bumpy, and I'd like to make a smooth one, I made one :ocarina: once and it was super smooth.... And I really want to recreate that moment. So please help me!! I'm thinking of using plaster, But I really can't get to many supplies, limited y'know? All I have are basic tools, something to round it out, a loop, some slot sticks, drill bits, some sponges rolling pin, and a kidney. Any Ideas on any other tools that I could use, to make my ocarinas a bit better quality.

O.K Currently I'm using a Brand of Modeling Clay Amaco's Its Air Dry, and can also be used in a Kiln up to Cone 06. It lasts like an hour before It's a bit hard to mend with. I think (I lost the box) And I was wondering If I should use a different clay rather then modeling, but can be found locally at a craft store or pottery place. I live in Michigan and so far can't find many places that are close to my home. Amaco I really like, Well most of the time. Cause I can craft it easily, But I'm just wondering if there's a better clay. :o So If you have any ideas please reply.

Well thank you if you reply- Hope to see some posts soon =D

Why not make a solid model of an ocarina (without holoing it if you feel it will turn out best that way), then when you dry it (or cook it) and it's dry, put some clay around the dry sculpture to make the final mold? Then you can just holo it out while it's in the mold..

Thanks for the tip =D, but I'm not really sure where you're getting too, you're saying that I make a un-hollowed mold for the :ocarina: then I cover clay around that and remove the inner part. Or are you saying I should take a sweet potato looking mold, hollow it out, dry it then put clay inside of it the hollow it? Sorry I kind of lost it, Not sure what you're saying XD
