Some of you may have notice older style Songbird ocarinas bring sold on Ebay by user rjs0446. I myself purchased four of them. When I recieve them, I noticed obvious flaws in each. Most were cosmetic, but contacted Songbird about them.
His e-mails have explained that he donated old rejects to a friend to sell for charitable reasons. He insisted they all be photographed and recorded sound files individually for each. He does not concider them rejects to the point of posting a warning in the auction, but are kulls with some lasting value. He gave me permission to post about our conversation.
I believe that it is a noble thing to donate for a cause and not be wasteful, and can understand that the thought of destroying them can be heartbreaking. I destroyed one myself and cried about it.
However, I still feel that buyers should be properly informed of these ocarinas being listed for sale now or offered for sale in the future. People are bidding on them with the expectation of a Songbird retail quality instrument. Having purchased from him before, that reputation was what inspired me to bid.
The flaws on my purchases are as listed:
Bass - Has a melted 'gem' and off tuned tonic.
Baritone - Has uneven voice and mouth.
Tenor 1 - Has a sharp sided and uneven lip.
Tenor 2 - Has incorrect holes for an English pendant.
