CLAY!! WHERE TO GET? WHAT KIND TO GET? CLAY CLAY CLAY!!!

Postby the0carinakid on Thu Oct 23, 2008 4:14 am

I would like to start making ocarinas out of a better clay than the crap crayola airdry clay I get at Michaels, but the problem is...

I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO GET IT, WHAT KIND TO GET!!!!

For those of you who are experienced with making ocarinas, where do you get your clay? what kind do you get?

Well if you are still in school you can do what I do and ask the ceramics teacher if you can buy some from them! And I have been told that just about any clay except for Terracotta(too weak) work well for Ocarina making!

In the .,S., look up pottery suppliers under "Ceramic Equipment and Supplies" in the Yellow pages.
CLAYS
Many of these places will do firing, although that can get expensive after a while.

I was looking on this site for a while but I was concerned that shipping prices would be ridiculous! About how much is shipping? And would you recommend high or low fire?

Thanks!

Lead is used as a flux (melter) in glazes only, not clay. Look for glazes that are "dinnerware safe" which means they canbe usedon food containers.

Yes, you can. Porcelain is just another type of ceramic clay. However, it is high-fire, and unless you have your own kiln, most ceramic supply stores only fire their kilns to low-fire temperatures. You would be better served to buy a low-fire (earthenware) clay, which will work better with the low-fire glazes that these stoes sell.
