Quiet ocarina

Postby tyaf on Wed May 06, 2009 11:03 pm

Hey there!

I have a alto c STL "infinity" and while I'm pretty happy with it, my family has complained that it is a bit loud.
I'm looking to get another ocarina and was thinking maybe an alto c focalink or maparam. How do these compare in terms of volume to other ocarinas?

Thanks

The Ocarinas that Stl distributes tend to be louder ocarinas, and I know Focalink is a bit quieter (own both brands), but don't buy a new ocarina purely for a quieter noise. Those ocarinas won't be quiet enough to satisfy complaints. I would recommend this technique I discovered...

Place your lips every so slightly on the end of the mouthpiece and blow very softly (You'll have to do some experimenting to get it right) and you can make a much quieter and higher pitched sound while still being able to play tunes. This also creates great breath control, so when you are home alone play normally, before you know it you will sound a LOT better! Then who knows, maybe your family will want you to play!

right, good advice. I wouldn't buy one purely for the volume of the sound it produced, but I'm curious if there is much variation in the volume of different ocarinas.
Also, how do the focalinks and maparams compare in terms of breath requirement?

I don't know about Maparams, but I know Focalinks are easier to play, learning on a WPN/Stl ocarina will make you appreciate it much more!
