Also turning on the "Must give comment" might help a bit. That way people won't give karma so easily, thus every point of karma is either a) more meaningful b) pointless because of people still giving karma for pointless/stupid reasons.

But, I'm still voting "yes" for disabling the karma system.

i agree with teidon, i think that the site should just ditch karma, because there's no point. That way, there wuld be no cheaters!! Also, i dont know who said it, but if someone joins this site, it usually means that they want an ocarina or have an ocarina so th nerds who give themselves loads of karma should stop pressing buttons, and start blowing into heir little plastic/ceramic/wooden ocarina, and start spreading their music!! Tis way, everything would be much better, and everyone would be happy becaase this forum would be a spam-free, cheat-free, abuse-free, site, and would be a great place for ocarina players of all ags. After all, that is what this site is all about, OCARINAS, not being silly little cildren and wanting to be the best because you have the most karma points and therefore are great!!

That is all!!
Ocarinas rock, I rock, All of you rock, and all is right with the world!!

Ok, ill give some time for more opinions, but it seems its for the better to get rid of the karma aspect.

I cherish each and every relevent Karma comment I have recieved.
It's one of the few signs around here that what I do is appreciated.

I see nothing wrong with a restriction or two. I favor the time one.

I'm for scrapping karma, it feels good when I get positive karma, but it's too easy to abuse/mis-use and I hate popularity contests (besides, you can just send a PM/make a reply post saying you think the person did a great job hehe), just be yourself for crying out loud, who cares if you're cool or not.

I also agree that it loses it's meaning when people start to abuse the system, there's no way to tell who actually earned their karma, and who got high karma for stupid reasons... so that number ends up having no meaning.

As for post count, quality > quantity ;)

As for now, I have set it so you have to post a comment when giving karma. This will make those who give karma points reveal who they are, and keep them from spamming.

Still open for discussion here, just peeping everyone updated.

I do understand where you are coming from, it is always nice to know when your work is appreciated.
But this could also be done by way of PM or leaving a reply in the relevant topic.
I've seen alot of people show their appreciation for your hard work tabbing songs by replying in your tabs topic ;)

Karma does absolutely nothing.

I see no point to this. I don't care if people has "X" amount of karma. Let them. Do they get something? No. This forum is to talk about ocarinas , tabs, playing technique, and making ocarinas. I see no reason at all for this Off topic non-sense. For example: Community Pictures. I don't think this forum is a myspace profile. If you want to show off your pictures go to myspace. Games like tag or 3 word game is okay. I like it myself. But I do not spend my life putting karma. You will probably get BAD karma in real life. I do not care for Top ten posters or karma or location or when they joined. I just want to talk about ocarinas. I know a lot of people will disagree especially on Off Topic stuff. Personally I do not give a damn about where you went, your life problems, where you from, are you a fe/male, how old you are. Enjoy Life while you can instead of this computer. Play songs. If you don't now any, come back to the forums for tabs. Those who are making tabs good for you :D. But those who spam and put karma thinking they will be a mod. I will laugh and mock you.

Well, I think the content of posts should count, not the number of them at all.
Let's say some new member joins, and in their first post they give some great playing technique, for example, but this person wouldn't be eligible for karma until they posted 50-100 posts? Not fair, in my opinion.
There are a lot of posts that are responses to (for example), someone getting a new oc. These posts are in the vein of "congrats!," Sweet!," "Happy 4 u," and so on. These are nice, not spamming, I don't think, but not imparting any real information. By using post count as criteria to receive karma, these would count the same as those posts with information?
If this is the case, then karma would mean nothing.

In the short time I've been here, I've been as helpful as I possibly could in the ocarina making and the tabs and music section, and I've already managed to receive 5 or so karma points, all of which were accompanied by kind comments thanking me for my help. It's one of the things I like about this site, as it makes me feel appreciated for the help I render and encourages me to help in the future. Sure, you can just post a thank you, but karma is a little more personal in my opinion. It's like the difference between saying thank you and writing a thank you note.

I think the answer is to make it so people who post karma have to leave a comment. That discourages pointless karma awards and will keep negative karma to a minimum. But please don't turn karma off. It's one of the things that sets this community apart from most of the other forms I've been on.

So could it be agreed upon that those who dont care about karma dont have look at it? ;)

I dont mind keeping it. I think if used properly it can be very helpful in determining who is well appreciated (although im sure there are many who do a great job here who dont get as MUCH karma) But hey, its mostly for fun. :)

For as far as I care, the karma system may as well be enabled. It just seems to have quite limited configurability and no moderation capabilities which makes it easy to mis-use it.

But I think setting a minimum post count before one can give karma would be good. Just set it to something small like 10. That would mean that people can't make another account and then boost their main account's karma with it. But anyone who is seriously willing to be part of this community will soon enough be able to start giving karma.
