The Karma system

Postby Myung on Mon Mar 31, 2008 9:55 am

I think there's people cheating with the karma system.
I won't name any names, yet.
But I think that it's really lame to cheat and give yourself karma :(
Is there anything that the moderators/siteadmins can do about this?

To the people cheating(you know who you are): Stop doing it, IT'S SERIOUSLY LAME!!!

EDIT: I would also like to mention that I have received some undeserved karma, I don't know how much but if a mod or admin could remove it,
I would like that, thank you!

Despite what Myung says about me, i agree, i think that a particular user should only be able to give 1 karma to any other particular user!! That way the system would be fairer.

I have also recieved pointless karma from Nintendo1, be admin do something!!

Well, to be honest, i have observed the karma plugin, and gave myself some karma, and i will remove it, but i know it is possible to cheat with karma. If you know your member number, then just give someone else karma, and then change the member number in yours... I dont think the admins can stop this, because this is a fault in the plugin, and the freeforums.org admins should do the work. But i admit, i wanted to know how the karma plugin worked, and i gave myself karma, and i will remove it. I didnt mean to cheat orso, but i do alot with websites, and i wanted to know how it works...

Sorry

Oh, thats bad. But this "karma" isn't important after all. It's not a competition who's better here as I understand. The important thing is the questons on the forum get answered.
If the forum needs (I think it doesn't) reward system, I think it would be better to vote for the "person of the month/week", which contributed the most. A simple poll will do it.

A poll could turn into a popularity contest. And questions that were answered for "Video Games," might not be useful to those wanting answers for "Making the Ocarina," for example. Maybe a separate poll for each category.

Wouldnt it be cool if the people who cheat at karma had an ocarina? Maybe the ones that cheat and have ocarinas, could practice more so they were less nerdy.

I'm not saying that the karma thing is super important, all the more lame it is to cheat with it XD

The karma system can be a fun addon for the forum to show that you respect and appreciate someone's positive contribution on the forum.

But when there's cheating, it loses all meaning.

This is quite common. Karma systems doesn't work in a long run because people start abusing/miss using them. Some cheat, some give lots of negative or positive karma, etc. While karma system works it's a good way for example for newcomers to know who they can trust etc. But like Myung said, when few people starts to miss use it, it loses all meaning.

If mods have a way to know who gave karma for any specific person, I think i'd be appropriate to warn and/or ban those who miss uses the karma system. Or then it may as well be disabled, if the number of people miss using it grows too big.

And for the record, my karma is somewhat high compared to my post count, but I believe everyone whose been around for some time knows the reasons for that.

Well, I guess I have a couple options here from what you all are saying:

1) Disable the karma system completely because its not THAT important.
2) make giving karma less often (once a day?)
3) Start a ranking system through post counts
4) Leave it how it is.

#3 could be considered another form of competition (spamming ensues) but spam can be taken care of with mods/admins.

I would be for disabling, or make it so only moderators and admins can give karma to us normal users.

I would not advice your nr. 3 option, heavily encourages spamming.

Ranking system based on post count wouldn't really have any use. I mean, the post count is right there. No need to give names for numbers if you ask me.

But one another option would be that some people would be somehow picked up (by mods perhaps) and these people would be given a special title. Something like "Trusted member", "Santa's Little Helper" or something like that. This title would be given for "good" members, members who help other members and contribute to the community. There should be some kind of criterias to be matched before this title would be given. So, no monthly polls and winner gets the title, or anything similar. If no-one is good enough to be given this title then no-one gets it. Perhaps mods could every now and then discuss about it if there happens to be any "good" members around and then if majority of mods thinks that someone deserves it, he is then given the title. The title could be given through the member group system.

But I don't know if there really is any use for any kind of ranking system. I wouldn't mind if the karma system were disabled.

I like Teidon's idea!

If something like that is possible I say dump the karma system and adopt the Teidon system :D

[MOVING TO SUGGESTIONS FORUM!]

There is also the option to have a certain number of posts before you can add karma... Think I should set the bar at 50-100?

Here is the karma page settings that I can access. Suggestions?

I still say go with Teidon's idea and dump the karma system.

Setting a post limit for giving karma can also encourage spamming.

If you decide to keep the system, then maybe it is also a good idea to make the list of database comments bigger.
