Too Much Off-Topic on OU?

Postby OcarinaMan333 on Mon Mar 31, 2008 4:17 pm

I don't know if I am the only one to notice, but it seems as if there are more Off-Topic posts on O.U. nowadays than posts about Ocarinas, this isnt a huge problem...until I get to the new posts page, I feel like it is very hard to fing posts that I acctually find interesting, so my question is Mods/Admins is there some way that you can make a new topic button for the on topic and off topic posts? if not it isnt a problem

I somehow agree. Yet without those topics, the forum would be dull and mostly dead. :?
Finding a compromise is not easy.

Ditto, when I click the link under my username/avatar on the Home page to view posts made since my last visit, there are a lot I skip because I'm just not interested in them lol... But to each their own I guess, though this IS an Ocarina forum ;)

Im not opposed to Off Topic posts but it seems 80% of topics are now off topic, I would just be nice to see 80% about Ocarina 20% off topic

well i should have made my %'s an edit but I started this about 2 and 1/2 hours before you spoke of it on the karma page, so I dont think it really matters that you said it on the karma page, since this is asking the mods/admins if there is some way they can make searching through the new posts more tolerable, seeing as I like OU for Ocarina discussion which is becoming less and less popular here at OU

"Karma does absolutely nothing.

I see no point to this. I don't care if people has "X" amount of karma. Let them. Do they get something? No. This forum is to talk about ocarinas , tabs, playing technique, and making ocarinas. I see no reason at all for this Off topic non-sense. For example: Community Pictures. I don't think this forum is a myspace profile. If you want to show off your pictures go to myspace. Games like tag or 3 word game is okay. I like it myself. But I do not spend my life putting karma. You will probably get BAD karma in real life. I do not care for Top ten posters or karma or location or when they joined. I just want to talk about ocarinas. I know a lot of people will disagree especially on Off Topic stuff. Personally I do not give a damn about where you went, your life problems, where you from, are you a fe/male, how old you are. Enjoy Life while you can instead of this computer. Play songs. If you don't now any, come back to the forums for tabs. Those who are making tabs good for you Very Happy. But those who spam and put karma thinking they will be a mod. I will laugh and mock you.

There I think it should go here too.

I agree that the forums are full of unnecessary stuff....normally I can only get on OU every other day and I see 200+ posts and most of which are completely pointless...I just want to see what people have to say about the ocarina and it takes me too much time to find anything worth while...
what???fire???where's the fire????why won't you let me play with it???

this is sooooo true I got back from a 7 day vaccation 1500+ unread messages, it took me 5 minutes to catch up because only a few topics were ones acctually relating to Ocarina. T-T

OU is forming into a community, which have a tendancy to talk about themselves with others in the community. There are no rules against such behavior, and there is a subforum especially for such. For those who find such things tedious, is it too hard to skip over anything from the off-topic subforum?

no, but I just think it would be nice to have a separate new posts button for on and off topic, nothing super important but it may be nice

Wasn't David's (docjazz4) role to make a forum to TALK about the instrument not making a duplicate myspace. We ARE a community by sharing our thought ABOUT THE OCARINA. Not showing our faces or talking about our needs or usernames or all that off topic bull.

There are no rules against such behavior

I think one should be developed then...

What would you suggest that could keep people from posting useless stuff in the off-topic section?

I see it like this:

If you dont want to read stuff that is off-topic, dont go to the "off-topic" sub-forum.
Those who like discussing other stuff can go there.

That is why the whole top is the "Ocairna" section. So you dont have to scroll through the other stuff.

My question tuneofwind is... If you have been in a band did you speak to the others in the band only about music? When you went to school did you speak only of homework and assignments?

A community that grows will begin to seem a somewhat disconnected despite that there is ONE thing they have in similar. So to strengthen the community people seek other similarities between themselves and others so as to feel more a connection. Would you really want to continue to return to some group/club you joined if the other members seemed so cold with a solid concentration on their "purpose"?

I agree that there does seem a great deal of off-topic threads and that a filter of some sort would benifit the forums allowing everyone to easily find information for which the society was created. However, I believe cutting out the off topic conversations would destroy the community.

In the end, what is the point in a society that isn't social?
I would love to change the world... but they won't give me the source code!
