MasterOfTime wrote:This game is one of the best ever. Period. The graphics were terrible except for the cinematics, but graphics aren't high on my list of what makes a game. This game was good because of the storyline, gameplay, and music. I'm not sure what you disliked about the gameplay. The materia system is the only customizing structure I've ever liked in any of the RPGs I've played. It definitely beats the hell out of the sphere grid from FF X. The scope of this game is massive, and maxing it out is a challenging and rewarding experience. And liking a game for its music and plotline are totally valid. It seems you've belittled those aspects somewhat, but storyline is almost at the top of my list for how I judge games, right behind gameplay. Sometimes a game that's got choppy gameplay will even excuse itself by having an amazing storyline.

Simply put, the number of people who have played this game and loved it vastly outnumber the people who hated it. Few games are liked as universally as FF VII. It will be near the top of my greatest games list (and millions of other people's) for a long, long time.

EDIT: By the way, I throughly enjoyed Advent Children. What didn't you like about it?

One thing to keep in mind, he stated he doesn't remember the plot and I think that is a major reason why he made this post. For example, if after watching "Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles" I was like "This is junk. Come to think of it, Terminator 3 is junk and it doesn't jive with what I remember of Terminator 2." If I were to then go a step farther and say "Terminator 2 sucks. It's over hyped, and the plot was horrible" is basically what he did. He made a statement which didn't really match his opinions. He seems to not like the new FF7 stuff and since he doesn't remember the FF7 plot, assumes it was not good enough to remember. At least that is the perception I have of what he said. I think that if he did remember the plot, then he could appreciate it more.

As far as Advent Children, I had several problems with it. First, they make Barret look nothing like his character... AT ALL! The beard was way too small, the hair was off (he clearly had a "High and Tight Fat-top" in the game, not "Corn Rows"), and his body type was wrong (his upper body was V-shaped, not box-shaped) If they didn't say it was Barret, I would have never known. Second of all, they used many terms that FF7 used, but they were forced and didn't fit right. For example, Kadaj and his brothers refer to Jenova as "Mother" and it seems that only Rufus Shinra remembers Sephiroth calling Jenova mother. Everyone else, including Cloud and Tifa, are like "Who is he talking about?" Cloud even asks Rufus (who then pretended to not know, but based on a later conversation and the fact that he was trying to recruit Cloud, I'm convinced Rufus was lying to Cloud). Also, Kadaj refers to joining with Jenova and turning into Sephiroth as "The Reunion." That term is also taken from FF7 and was something Sephiroth referred to, but not meeting Jenova. He refers to all of the "Sephiroth Clones" meeting together (for him to kill them) as "The Reunion." While we are on the subject, everyone who had Jenova cells were gathered together by Sephiroth and killed (except Cloud, though he did fall under Sephiroths control several times in the story). Therefore, where did Kadaj and his brothers come from? Shouldn't they have been killed already in FF7? And you cannot simply say that "They were overlooked" for two reasons. First, Sephiroth could somehow feel everyone who had Jenova cells (that's how he controlled them). Secondly, they were all tagged with a number. All you would have to do is count. Does the dead bodies match the highest number tatoo? Simple as that. The fact of the matter is Square never says where Kadaj and his brothers came from in Advent Children (or anywhere else for that matter) because it cannot be explained. Their existence is a MacGuffin (something used to propel the plot forward). Lastly, the icing on the cake, is the killing of whatever version of Bahamut that was (since it didn't match any from the game). Having each character help lunge Cloud high enough to kill it was something off a Saturday morning cartoon. I felt like they should have handed me some milk and cookies instead of popcorn and soda. It was a joke.

Don't get me wrong. Advent Children was fun to watch. But it should have also never been made unless they knew it was air-tight (which it wasn't).

The rest of the "Final Fantasy Compilation" is SquareEnix's way of milking the most successful RPG in history (over 9.8 million copies worldwide, and still being sold in Japan today) Play the original game for the PlayStation and you'll understand. If you like RPG's, you'll enjoy it. Unfortunately, the graphics are atrocious because the game is over 10 years old. Quite frankly, aside from Crisis Core, all the FF7 compilation games were horrible (this does not include the original, only the stuff released in the last few years). Crisis Core is pretty good, but not an RPG, but an action game (some consider it an Action-RPG like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night).

BTW, here is a picture I took just this weekend at a Bic Camera in Tachikawa. You can still buy FF7 new off the shelf on basic retailers here in Japan. I wish it were true in America.

Graphics do not make a good game, Ocarina of time is a prime example.

thats what i was thinking.
the original game shouldnt have to do anything with things that come after them.
the ones that come after is the company trying to get as much money as they can out of it while they can.

i like ff7, it was a great game.
didnt like some of the other spinoffs, but it doesnt really have to do anything with ff7.

just like ff10, another great game, but i think x2 sucked.
that doesnt mean i dont like 10 still.

I only played the first 5 minutes of Final Fantasy 7 and quit. I'm sure it was a really good game, but by then I was spoiled on my pretty graphics. Dirge was a good game in my opinion. I got to shoot stuff and it made me laugh so I'm not complaining. Only complaint I have about FF7 is the fact it's creators are running it into the ground.

FFX I loved. FFX-2 was lacking and I never did get around to beating it. The characters that made FFX so great are gone or not playable in X-2. And Yuna still whining over Tidus I found annoying....

why do people get so put off by graphics.
graphics arent everything you know.
there are just as many crap games that have the best graphics as there are good games that have not so good graphics.

GamingMad wrote:So many people say that FF7 is great, well not really. I'm not saying it a bad game it just has way too many ridiculous spin off games. For example: Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core. Why does Zack need his own game? The best in the series has to be FF6, no question.
if you paid attention to FFVII the original game there were questions that went un answered like what happened before cloud joined AVLANCHE as a merc advent children was supposed to be a "reunion" for the FFVII characters because ppl wanted to know what happened after the game ended plus there were other side stories right after the game this is also y theres dirge of cerberus (also introduced Genesis) there was also a turks game for the phone (japanese only) and many people dont view the way the game played battle wise its epic for its story not only the initial story either (this is where Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus come in) when u first meet vincent he hints at knowing sephiroth personally i was wondering vincents back story and i wanted to know what happened before the game not to mention it was the first FF game to be 3d and have better music

BTW, Final Fantasy is made by Square (now SquareEnix) which is a Japanese company who's entire staff is Japanese and programmed in Japan. (This is in regard to a comment on another thread)
